About Astrology
What is Astrology?
Astrology is a system of divination — a tool for studying the patterns and movements of the planets to reveal the greater systems and rhythms that are part of shaping our lives. It blends astronomy, philosophy, and spirituality, and allows us to discern the cycles and energies that impact our lives on Earth.
A common misconception is that the planets cause things to happen. We all have a friend or two who love to blame their poor choices on the planets. But, that interpretation is misleading. Think of the cosmos as a mirror: celestial movements don’t cause events so much as reflect the rhythms that shape them. They act as omens and signals of changing frequencies that make certain outcomes more likely.
Ultimately, Astrology is one of the universe’s symbolic languages, and astrologers are its translators and interpreters.

Why Astrology?
Astrology allows us to zoom out and see the bigger picture. We begin to understand that while we are distinct beings with our own roles and destinies, we’re also a part of a larger cosmic whole. Both truths exist at once, and Astrology gives us a language for understanding ourselves within this larger ecosystem.
Astrology is less about prediction and more about alignment. It becomes a powerful tool to align us with our purpose and to help navigate our reality. It brings us more self-awareness so that we can meet life’s challenges, see patterns, and recognize our gifts. When we explore our birth charts and truly know ourselves, we can make better choices and find magic and meaning in everything we do.

What is a Birth Chart?
A birth chart is the snapshot of the sky at the moment you were born. It maps the positions of the planets and signs and offers insight into your personality, core themes, strengths, challenges, and the events your soul will most likely encounter in this lifetime.
The Astrotwins use a great analogy in their article and video walk-through of a natal chart, which I will reference throughout this article here. As the Astrotwins explain, you can think of the birth chart as the blueprint — or movie — of your life. It is a mirror of ourself and our story that is meant to play out on Earth.
How to Read a Birth Chart
The Planets
In the movie of your life, the planets are the actors: each one represents an archetype or a facet of your personality. A planet’s expression changes depending on the sign it occupies — some signs let a planet speak in its most natural voice, while others present obstacles or lessons. Below is a high-level summary of what each planet represents.
Your identity, central purpose, ego, how you shine; the archetypal father.
Your feelings, emotional life, environment, inner climate; the archetypal mother.
Your mind and communication style. How you learn and express ideas; the messenger.
Your love language, values, and how you attract; the archetypal feminine.
Your drive, assertion, passion, and conflict style; the archetypal masculine.
How you grow, seek meaning, expand. Luck, higher learning, adventure; the sage.
How you meet limits, responsibility, discipline, fears, and karma; the elder.
How you rebel, innovate, and pursue freedom; the agent of change.
How you imagine, idealize, and seek transcendence; the mystic.
How you meet transformation, power, endings, and rebirth; the alchemist.
The Houses
While planets are the actors, the houses are the stages where scenes in your life’s movie take place. The sky is divided into 12 equal parts (dependent on which house system you are practicing in); each segment is a house. A zodiac sign will occupy each house and shape the themes that dominate that realm of life. Below is a high‑level summary of what each house represents.
The house of self. Your outward personality, first impressions, self‑image, and how you begin to explore the world.
The house of value. Personal resources, finances, self‑worth, and what makes you feel secure.
The house of communication. Immediate learning, the lower mind, short trips, siblings, and neighbours.
The house of family and foundations. Home, emotional roots, ancestry, and the foundational parent.
The house of creativity and joy. Play, self‑expression, hobbies, romance, dating, and children.
The house of service. Daily routines, work, health, the body, care, and pets.
The house of partnerships. One‑to‑one relationships, business partners, committed partnerships, and marriage.
The house of transformation. Intimacy, shared resources, death and rebirth, depth psychology, and the occult.
The house of beliefs. Higher learning, long‑distance travel, belief systems, law, and the search for meaning.
The house of career. Public image, social status, ambition, legacy, authority figures, and the publicly influential parent.
The house of friendship. Friends, group associations, social networks, community, belonging, and hopes for the future.
The house of the hidden. The unconscious, blind spots, things unseen, collective patterns, solitude, and spirituality.

Astrology invites us to remember that we are part of a greater, living system.
Like a birth chart that contains every sign and planet and the repeating movements of the heavens, we too are multifaceted, interconnected, and evolving beings. Somewhere in our charts we all shine like the Sun, burn with Mars’ passion, and embody the Moon’s nurturing energy. We all display Gemini’s curiosity, Scorpio’s intensity, and Leo’s courage in some area of our lives. When we acknowledge and hold all parts of ourselves, we begin to understand our place in the universe. The cosmos reflect our true nature: wholeness, oneness, eternity.
